VR Support

Once interactions and animations are implemented, players would have the ability to explore scenes and enter character POVs in VR (similar to Yiffalicious). Ideally you could also manipulate parts of the character creator in VR, but that would probably be far more complicated to design.

Developer response

VR will be implemented after interactions.

Fair enough. It was clunky and didn't have controller support. But YL1 hasn't been updated in over four years, and Unity VR support has improved significantly since then. Since FVNE will be running a newer version of Unity than YL1 did, I think it would be reasonable to expect that any headset that can use SteamVR will be compatible.

I do hope we get controller support this time around, though. Most VR games that expect you to use a keyboard and a mouse are basically unusable.

Its been over a year and no updates?

First of all, odes talked about it a bit in the most recent video devlog for Patreon, so we have had updates.

Firstly, I missed that update so that's on me. No need to be so matter of factual.

Second, this suggestion already says "Will be implemented" and "VR similar to Yiffalicious will be implemented after interactions".

Yes, its been on that same status for over a year and nobody has said anything until now, IE the video update that was just posted.

What more updates do we need until the interactions build?

The update is about the interaction build and weather its actually being worked on or put on the backburner, So far I haven't seen anything being worked on accept character heads... which we have a plethora of, and development resources could go to something better. Apologies if my question and answers seem harsh, not their intentions. Yet again, none of this was addressed until recently with the video., and barely then.

To make it short, what is actually being worked on? Again, Maybe i'm being harsh, if i am again I apologize, I've developed games myself and have an intimate understanding of how this works. Why don't we have basic VR support yet? It seems like anytime this subject comes up it gets skirted around with no real answers and people getting upset that I even asked. That's all I want to know.

Yeah, you sound pretty harsh to me. I don't think the devs have been evasive at all. Then again, I've actually been reading and watching the Patreon updates for a few years now and I've seen every stage of this app's development. So I understand how limited the VR support in Yiffalicious was and that VR support is only happening in FurryVNE because we (specifically me, this is my suggestion in case you didn't notice)

I also understand that the reason we keep getting new character part models is because that aspect of the development is done by dogson, a 3d modeler, not a programmer. The main dev, odes, has basically ONLY been working on the interactions build, and time spent creating VR support for an app that doesn't even have an interactions mode yet would be time spent NOT working on interactions for no clear benefit.

As for the interactions build, their biggest obstacle right now is a bug in all stable versions of Unity that affects the tool that serves as the very basis of how the new penetration mechanics work. If you want an early version of the interactions build sooner rather than later, go bother Unity and tell them to backport the bug fix. If you're such a big time game dev with an intimate understanding of how this works, I'm sure you can pull some strings.

Sorry if my answers seemed harsh. I just don't like someone who has contributed literally nothing to this community using my suggestion as a platform to air his non sequitur grievances with the devs because he hasn't bothered to actually check the very detailed updates the devs have been putting out for years now about what they're working on, why they're prioritizing what they're prioritizing, and what progress they've made or what setbacks they've experienced.

Unity rug-pulled HDRP a few months ago, so the render pipeline migration has been put on hold, which also means VR has been put on hold.

so, not getting VR then? i mean thats fine, but it has been requested for along time, and its not a small portion of the community? if we are constantly chasing new tech then we cant ever get to it... might as well just nix it and recover the resources at this point?

I've been here far longer than you, and supported this from the very start. Not that you would know, because when they did their first major overhaul many original account where deleted. This was before they ever had a discord btw.

if you dont repeat exactly verbatim what they want you to say, then you get mobbed by the staff, its always been that way and will continue to be that way. they want to know about things we dont like, till we voice that, then the defenders come, then finally one of the admins will come after its progressed into an arguement....

its fine to disagree, its not fine to attempt to silence people asking questions or expecting ppl to do what they said they will.

the actual answer is dont worry about VR, you arent getting it, and if you do, itll be when its irrelevant.

we obviously need more heads rather than VR.

@Django

So what's the excuse now? Interactions are long past and my point is till valid years later. At this point there is no excuse.

Also: " I just don't like someone who has contributed literally nothing to this community"

I've been here far longer than you, and supported this from the very start. Not that you would know, because when they did their first major overhaul many original account where deleted. This was before they ever had a discord btw.

You may have been with the Patreon longer than me, but you absolutely have not been on FurryVNE longer than me. Your account was 4 months old when we last had this conversation with 0 creations, and now your account is 4 years older with still 0 creations. That was why I said (and still say) you contributed nothing to this community. Maybe you're super prolific in the YL1 community and haven't really gotten into FurryVNE because of the lack of VR. If so, that's totally fine, but that definitionally means you're not active in this part of the community. Sorry if that bothers you.

As for @rugarou, nobody is out here trying to silence you. However, I'm going to have to ask you to apologize to Dogson for talking shit about the heads. As I have already said before, you are not getting body parts INSTEAD of VR. The character modelling is done by Dogson, who is not a programmer, and he has done literally nothing to earn your ire. To quite the contrary, if you didn't like his work, you wouldn't be so eager to look at it in VR.

And odes did go into this in Patreon closer to the beginning of the year, but I'll go over the details so that you can understand.

First, why can't they just do VR right now?

The reason for that is because the current render pipeline is dumb and old. If I remember correctly, it does technically support VR, but in the old way where it just renders the scene twice, once for each eye, effectively doubling the render time. If you've used FurryVNE, you'd know that performance degrades the more characters you add to a scene, which is why you can't add more than 6 or so without making the scene chug. If they tried to implement VR in the current pipeline, my guess is that it wouldn't work out-of-the-box with most of the custom shaders, and even if it did, it would still double the overhead and cripple performance. A two-character scene would run like there were 4 characters, a four-character scene just couldn't run at all... And as a VR enthusiast, you likely know how critical performance is to making the experience playable.

This was where HDRP was supposed to come into the picture. In addition to having features that would just allow them to improve the look and lighting of the application, it also has more robust VR rendering options to reduce the additional performance overhead caused by traditional VR rendering.

OK, so why aren't they migrating to HDRP like they planned for years?

Because Unity dropped future development for HDRP at the beginning of this year and has yet to fill the feature parity gap with URP, which means that if odes runs into problems or limitations during a migration to HDRP, he's likely stuck with them forever or he'll just end up having to scrap the work he does getting to that point anyway, and it would require a LOT of work.

So to put it another way, he could either wait for Unity to get URP to have all the desired features from HDRP (the recent update from this month is actually a pretty promising step in this direction, so this may end up proving to be a wise decision), or he could potentially waste a ton of time attempting to jump from a dead pipeline to a dying one.

Full disclosure, I initially advocated for just switching to HDRP, mostly because I also just want VR now, but seeing that Unity is actually putting the work into URP, it's really hard to argue in favor of switching to HDRP at this point, even though that was the plan for years. The plan was also that Unity was going to support it like they said they would.

That said, I suspect that newer VR features like the Steam Frame's foveated rendering won't be implemented for HDRP, so locking into HDRP would also mean locking into the current state of VR for the foreseeable future. So even as a VR enthusiast myself, I think I'd rather they be able to keep pace with the field as it continues to mature.

You can call all of this "excuses", and that's your opinion, but once the whole situation is laid out, it's kind of hard to rationally justify any other course of action. He can either fix bugs and work on the Cloud and other back-end things that will actually matter in the long term no matter what happens with the rendering pipeline, or he can waste that development time migrating from a dead pipeline to a dying pipeline, knowing full well they will probably just have to migrate to URP later anyway.

Reasonable people can disagree depending on what they actually prioritize here. If you just want a VR game, then I can understand wanting to prioritize that over everything else. And you guys are welcome to state your opinion that it ought to be prioritized over everything else, even if it causes the devs to implement something below their standards and/or force them to duplicate work later on.

You're not jerks for wanting VR sooner rather than later, especially since it keeps getting kicked further down the road. I do think the admins should update the response on this suggestion since we're quite a ways beyond "after interactions" at this point, so I can see people feeling misled by that, but it really was the original plan and odes hates making promises he can't keep. If Unity didn't abandon HDRP this year, there's a strong chance odes would have been working on the migration right now. You can call bullshit if you want, but that really did seem to be the original plan for this year.

By all means, if you have opinions, share them! No one is silencing people, especially Patrons, just for asking questions or expressing dissatisfaction.

But don't be an asshole about it, and especially stop scapegoating Dogson's great work in the process. The tradeoff isn't "body parts or VR", the tradeoff is "maintaining a stable development environment or VR". If there is a debate to be had at this point, that's it.

You're not talking to a PR team or a Microsoft subsidiary trying to give you the runaround and quietly cut planned features. They're just a bunch of European dudes doing the best they can, and if you have reasonable questions, you're probably going to get reasonable answers. My issue, first and foremost, is that you are literally gaslighting so hard right now. you can act like Im a troll if you want, but, the things I have said are true, werent an attack beyond their critque, but you come white knighting in an overly defensive manner yourself everytime.

when I asked politely in discord I was instantly attacked. so its fairly disingenious and hypocritical to post in the manner you do.

the fact is if anyone says anything critical or negative, yall could say, ok youve been heard, heres our plans, but yall go on the offensive first which then garners reactionary nonsense, and we are here.

regaurdless of your position, you are overly aggressive. when i came to you with an issue, you dismissed it and passed me off to someone else, its fairly ridiculous you expect ppl to be super polite to you while you act like this. get a grip man.

when odes responded to me in discord, there was no issue. i accepted that answer and moved on, the rest of yall were literally just noise.

your attitude towards VR is largely why we feel the way we do, you feel its a waste so really the point is moot, cuz anytime its ever brought up for development youll be a negative voice in that room. in the same vein however, the things that will make VR not worth it, will also do the same to the entire engine and then?

you have the option to hear ppl that arent happy, or incise them, its really up to you. choose wisely.

you have the option to hear ppl that arent happy, or incise them, its really up to you. choose wisely.

I can't personally speak for the behavior of the people in the Discord, I haven't really been around there much lately, but it is an unofficial Discord. The devs don't run an official Discord. Patreon is the most reliable way to get in touch with the devs.

Second, I've mentioned this a few times, but it bears repeating, I am not a dev or paid staff. I'm a Patron just like you. I like to help out in the community when I have time, but lately I've had less time for it than I'd like. So if you feel like I brushed you off at some point, I apologize. I imagine it's either because I didn't see your question or I didn't have the time to get into it, not because I didn't think your time was worth anything.

Third, what the heck do you mean I feel VR is a waste? This is literally my suggestion! There's literally no one else in the community who has been asking for VR implementation to be made a priority longer than I have, and I still want it. I even mentioned in my last response that I publicly (on the Patreon, you can go find it if you don't believe me) advocated in favor of just doing HDRP. I am literally completely on your side. I just also know I won't get it sooner by disregarding all of odes' very reasonable concerns and getting mad that it hasn't happened yet. And I also recognize there are genuine costs to getting it sooner rather than later.

I am never trying to be rude to anyone, and I've made an effort to be clear that the only thing that I really thought was rude from you was the shit about the model work, and I still think you should feel sorry about that because I hate seeing good, kind, hard-working artists catch strays for no good reason. I don't need you to be super polite and I don't mind you being a dick to me, again I'm just some guy, maybe I deserve it. Everything else you've said is fine, if a little bit dismissive of how hard the team works to put out meaningful improvements every month. Just don't talk shit about Dogson and we're cool.

I'm all about listening to people who are unhappy, and I know for a fact the team cares a lot about that, too. But I also don't want them to dread doing the VR support in part because some of the people could improve the way they advocate for it.
